Kite Flying

This March has been nice and windy. Just the way all Marches should be, in my opinion. Peanut learned the Mr. Wind song at preschool and has been singing it around the house quite a bit. The kids have been playing outside in the lovely wind. The air’s just a little chilly so we still need jackets and sweaters but I love this kind of weather and wind just makes it that much better. On Saturday I had a rehearsal with my accompanist for the upcoming NATS competition so while I was gone ODD took the kids to the park to fly kites for the first time this year. I joined them after my rehearsal and we stayed at the park to keep flying the kites for a while longer. It was such a beautiful day with slightly overcast skies and a nice bit of wind. It felt great to be outside.

Apparently Wingnut only flew his Spiderman kite for a minute before deciding he was done. He and I spent our time snuggling and watching ODD and Peanut fly their kites. They aren’t pictured here but Peanut few her Little Mermaid kite while ODD flew his yellow kite. It’s still a good flier even after 13 years. The kids love watching it spin in circles.

After a while ODD and Peanut started to relax while kite flying.

The kids were getting pretty tired by the time we left. Wingnut snuggled in on ODD’s chest while he waited for us to finish playing.

The kids kites are the little dollar kites from Voldemart of Target and they fly surprisingly well. Peanut, at least, loves getting to feel like a big kid when she flies her kite with her daddy.

Polka Dotties

Neither Peanut nor Wingnut have inherited my skim-milk skin. We thought Peanut might have at first because she was so pale when she was born. Even the nurses in the hospital commented on it. Her heart rate had dropped during my contractions before they finally did my c-section so they kept her for observation for a little bit after the birth to make sure she was okay. Everything was looking good except her skin color which was staying quite pale. One of the nurses said something about how she wasn’t getting any color and another nurse replied, “Well, did you see her mom?” ODD, who was in the room, got a chuckle out of that.

Very pale 2

Almost six years later she’s still on the whiter side but it’s now clear she doesn’t really share my lighter-shade-of-pale skin. She still burns occasionally but it always turns to tan and she can even tan without burning at all. I got sunburned for the first time at six weeks old when my mom took me outside for ten minutes. It hasn’t gotten much better in the last almost thirty years.

There was never really any question about Wingnut’s skin. He has ODD’s coloring all the way. ODD can get quite dark when he spends time outside in the summer and Wingnut tends to be the same way. ODD also has some deep pores and even at this young age we can see that Wingnut is the same.

Recently, though, I realized there is one more way my kids’ skin differs from mine. Freckles. They don’t freckle and neither does ODD. I, on the other hand, have a perma-layer of freckles all year long. They fade quite a bit in winter but they’re still there and as soon as I spend any time outside when it gets warm they pop right out again. It’s more than just a sprinkling across my nose. They appear all over my face, arms, shoulders, legs, and pretty much anyplace else that has seen the sun.

This is one of my shoulders which hasn’t seen the sun since last August. The freckles are still fairly dark.

Lately Wingnut likes to tell us all the things he loves about us in a big, long list. It’s cute to hear him say, “I love your eyes. I love your hair. I love you nose,” and point to each in turn. The other day he was sitting next to me, looking at me, and said, “I love your polka dotties.” I wasn’t sure I heard correctly so I said, “What?” He pointed to my arm and said, “I love your polka dotties on your arm,” then pointed to my cheek and said, “And I love your polka dotties on your face.” That was when I realized he was talking about my freckles. It gave me a good laugh while I thanked him and gave him a hug. I thought it was funny that he’d noticed my freckles and even funnier that he called them polka dotties. I guess that is what they look like. Perhaps from now on when I’m asked to select my race when filling out forms I should write in “polka dotted.”

Memory Lane – Clothes Edition

ODD and I have been fighting some miserable bug for the last week and have been mostly out of commission because of it so I’m sorry I’ve been MIA. I’m finally able to be upright for an extended period of time, though, so I’m happy to be back posting again even if my brain isn’t back to working at full capacity yet.

As previously mentioned, Em is letting me borrow her maternity clothes right now. She brought over two big totes full and when I finally got around to going through them I realized I was going to need more space in my closet to put them all. So I pulled out everything that can’t possibly fit me for another 6 months so I could throw them into storage.

While pulling out each piece I came to a sad realization. Most of my Sunday clothes and/or nicer clothes are 10-15 years old. Yikes! Most of them date back to high school and early college. They’re still pretty which is why I’ve hung on to them for so long but oh, my. When I actually look at them I see they have become a bit dated. I was so shocked when I realized 1998 wasn’t “just a few years ago” but was, in fact, 14 years ago(!) I had to show ODD. Then call my mom and tell her how sad and surprising and funny I found it.

And now I’d like to share a few of my findings with you. Allow me to take you on a little trip down memory lane. If I weren’t pregnant I’d take pictures wearing them. As it is, you, my dear readers, are being subjected to scanned photos from the past. My apologies. At least you can laugh. Some faces have been blocked to protect the innocent.

This is probably the oldest dress still in my collection. It’s a purple-blue color  with a scoop neck front and v neck back. I think it was my winter dress in 1997-98. I wore it to Homecoming in 1998 and again to the Valentine’s dance in 1999. It was floor length and very simple with a slightly lower Empire waist. And aren’t my bangs awesome? By the way, we’re posed backward because it was a girl’s choice dance and my friends and I almost never posed “normally” for dance pictures. My mom hates the group picture from this dance because my date and I were facing the back wall so our faces couldn’t be seen. It’s still one of my favorite dance pictures.

The Renaissance renaissance. I was in high school when the Empire waist came back in. This was one of my most favorite dresses from that time. And probably my most expensive before my wedding dress. It was made of blue velvet with two kind of gold ribbon. There was also a wrap that went with it. The dress weighs about a thousand pounds. It was sort of inspired by Marguerite’s peacock ball gown in Ever After which came out the fall before I wore it to Prom. Photos are from some glamour shots kind of place that isn’t in business any longer.

This dress is the same pattern as the peacock dress above but made with different fabric. It was a home decor fabric which my mom threatened to also make curtains out of for our living room so we refer to it as my curtain dress. Again, it’s floor length with the Empire waist thing going. I wore it to Homecoming my senior year. This was taken by my mom later that fall. There are also some awesome pictures of my little sister at 7 years old in this collection of photos which I will refrain from posting so as not to completely embarrass her. She was a cute, little thing, though.

This skirt is a double layer linen look fabric. My mom made it to take with me while I was a nanny. I also have a spring version in a minty green color. This was taken on the day I received my temple endowment in 2002. Again, it’s a long a-line.

Old Photos

Ah, an engagement photo (yes, I have the rights to them). The days of horizontal stripes in boxy sweaters. Not to mention the long, boxy skirt with socks pulled up and Docs. Yeah. ODD’s clothes are all a bit big, too. What can I say? We are children of the 90′s when everyone wore things 3 sizes larger than necessary. I can’t even talk about ODD’s hair. It took another 3 years before he let me cut it shorter and he stopped combing it to the side. Aren’t we clueless and cute, though?

Old Photos

Oh, yes. The plaid. Everyone had plaid button-down shirts and baggy or flared jeans. This photo was for a local fashion show at the mall. Again, the photography business that took the photos doesn’t exist anymore as far as I know.

And, just for fun, these photos pretty much illustrate my uniform for most of high school and college. Lucky’s Peanut pants (still a favorite even if wide leg isn’t really the thing anymore), polos, sweaters, and horizontal stripes, with Docs.

It’s hilarious to me to remember being in high school and thinking my little sister (ten years younger) could totally wear whatever dress I was having made because the style couldn’t possibly be that far out of date by the time she would be going to dances. Oh, how little did I realize how quickly and vastly styles change. I’m sure she wouldn’t be caught dead in many of my old dance dresses.

Some of these dresses and skirts have sentimental value to me so I’ll probably always hang onto them but they will be removed from real circulation. The rest have either already been let go or soon will be so I’m not unintentionally clinging to the 1999 look. My every day clothes get purged fairly regularly but for some reason my Sunday/dress clothes don’t get overhauled as often. I’m happy to say I don’t wear floor length skirts or dresses very often anymore and have embraced the idea of acknowledging that my body does, in fact, (sort of) have a shape. Thinking about it more while dressing in maternity clothes is making me also think about how I want to dress for church and other nicer events once I don’t have an enormous belly anymore. So while I still look back with fondness (and a lot of cringing and giggling) I’d like to take this moment to say I’m letting go and moving on.

Angry Birds

On Saturdays ODD can only sleep in so long. His internal clock is so accustomed to waking up early that he can’t manage to sleep in very long. I, on the other hand, would sleep until 11 if left to my own devices. Once ODD is up and banging around the house it doesn’t take long for Peanut and Wingnut to follow. If ODD does try to sleep in the kids eventually get up and crawl in with us. Saturday mornings are the only times they’re allowed to climb into bed with us and we spend most of that time laughing, hiding under blankets, tickling, and throwing pillows. Then ODD and the kids get up, start making pancakes or waffles for breakfast, and I try to get a little more sleep.

A couple of weekends ago while ODD and Peanut were making breakfast Wingnut took ODD’s phone and brought it into our room. He climbed up on the bed next to me and started playing Angry Birds. The sight just made me laugh and I had to get up to take a picture.

I love his little legs stretched straight out in front of him and it’s hilarious to watch his fat, little fingers maneuver the slingshot that flings the birds. He concentrates quite intently on it.

Both he and Peanut are very into Angry Birds. I posted a bit about it today on Everything Is Amazing as well because I found an Angry Birds magnetic free printable online and printed them for my kids. They played with them all afternoon. Peanut is especially good at setting up the pigs to be knocked over. This little arrangement was all her doing. I was quite surprised and impressed.

If your kids are as into Angry Birds as mine are you should give this little printable a shot. Mine are in Angry Bird heaven.

Frozen Yogurt Date

For the last few months ODD and I have been making an effort to take the kids out on little dates once in a while so they can each get a little one-on-one time with us. Depending on what’s going on we switch of with each kid. While I took Wingnut to a birthday party ODD took Peanut bowling. While Peanut had a marble jar reward movie with me ODD stayed home with Wingnut and played trains with him, then snuggled with him while they watched Up with popcorn and everything. It’s been something all of us have really enjoyed working out and the kids always love a bit of individual attention, especially from ODD since he isn’t around all the time.

Last weekend the stake primary program at our church hosted a daddy-daughter date. We didn’t know much about it as it wasn’t announced much in congregation (or we missed it because we are perpetually late for meetings) but Peanut was super excited about it and she and ODD headed out when we were told it started. As it turns out the party started half an hour early than we were told and unbeknownst to us it was also a 50′s themed party and the guests were supposed to dress up. Apparently somehow everyone got the memo except us but Peanut and ODD still had a fun time. They had a yummy dinner, played games, and took pictures of each little girl with her daddy. Peanut and ODD’s snapshot is proudly displayed on our fridge. All in all, despite ODD not feeling super great that night, he and Peanut were happy they went.

While ODD and Peanut were having their date I took Wingnut out for a little date, too. I considered taking him to McDonald’s to play but wanted something a little more interactive, where he wouldn’t be so distracted by a playground, so instead we went to TCBY for frozen yogurt. I let Wingnut sample a few flavors I thought he might like and let him choose which one he wanted. Then he got to choose a bunch of toppings to go with it. He went for cake batter frozen yogurt topped with strawberries, raspberries, mini Reese’s Pieces, and gummy bears. I had some pink grapefruit sorbet which I’d been craving for a few weeks.

Date with Wingnut

We sat on a little orange couch and happily enjoyed our frozen yogurt together.

Date with Wingnut

He wanted to take a picture of us making goofy faces. What a silly, sweet, snuggly, little guy he is. I like getting some one-on-one time with him and he seems to eat it up, too.
