Fall Jacket #2

Posted by hairyshoefairy on Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 Under Craftiness, Little Peanut, Squee!

I’ve been debating about what kind of fabric I wanted to use for Peanut’s fall jacket.  I bought this Oliver + S pattern in June while at the quilting shop hop but couldn’t decide if I wanted to use a laminate and have it be sort of a raincoat, or use a wool and have it be a heavier coat, or use a cotton and have it be a lighter fall jacket.  I waffled about it even after I made Wingnut’s fall jacket.

Then a couple weeks ago I went to a small farmer’s market in South Jordan.  It’s right outside Material Girls so, of course, I had to drop in to see what they had.  To my surprise they had this bright, fun fabric on sale.  I already knew Peanut loved it because she chose the pink colorway for her flower blankie so I grabbed it up.  I found a smaller, coordinating print for an accent and a fuzzy, coordinating flannel for the lining so it would be a little warmer.  There was another flannel I was considering and may go back to buy because I have some corduroy that would match it perfectly.  Maybe later.

Anyway, it’s been sitting, washed and folded, on the ironing board in my sewing room for the last couple of weeks because I haven’t had time, and also because I wanted to save it for my September sewing project.  Yesterday I couldn’t wait any longer, though, and got started on it.  I finished it this morning, so even though I did most of it yesterday, it still counts.

This also might be a good time to introduce my newest tool.  The Peanut Dress Form!  I’ve wanted one for quite a while, like since the first season of Project Runway when I saw how useful they could be.  They’re so expensive, though, and I could never afford one.  I’d heard about making dress forms out of duct tape but never knew how until a friend on twitter sent me a link to a tutorial.  So one afternoon I turned on a movie so Peanut would stay with me, wrapped her in plastic wrap, then wrapped her in duct tape.  She thought it was kind of funny but didn’t really pay much attention to me.  After three layers I cut it off her and taped it back together.  I put off stuffing it because I needed to collect some newspaper and stuff but ODD suggested using foam insulating filler stuff.  I sprayed it all over the inside but it took ages to dry and the expanding was hindered by the plastic wrap so I think next time I’ll use newspaper and stuffing like it originally suggests.  It’s mounted on a small lamp base from IKEA.  Voila!  A dress form for $10-15!  It’s not the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen, I’m sure, but it works for me.

Her little belly sticking out is so cute.  It makes me laugh.

Anyway, back to the jacket.  The pattern didn’t call for accent fabric but after making Wingnut’s I decided to just go for it because I thought it was so cute and made it just a little different.

With the top toggle unbuttoned.  Again, the sleeves are long so I roll them up and let the lining peek out.

The pattern is well written and has the option of a quilted lining insert for more warmth.  I think I’m going to make it when I get some more time.  It isn’t too cold yet, though, and the jacket is fully lined with the flannel so it will be fine for quite a while still.

Even the cute pockets are lined with the flannel.

I think it will be perfect for chilly mornings when I take Peanut to preschool.

And look!  A smile!  It’s been quite some time since I made something she doesn’t pout and whine about wearing.  That must mean it’s extra cute.

Family Golfing

Posted by hairyshoefairy on Tuesday Aug 31, 2010 Under Little Peanut, Wingnut

ODD got suckered into buying one of those local high school cards that gives you discounts at random businesses.  He’s a leader for the Young Men in our stake and when one of his young men asked him if he wanted to buy one he couldn’t say no.  Anyway, one of the things this card gives us a discount on is miniature golf.  We’ve driven by this mini golf place quite a bit and have talked about going but just haven’t gotten around to it until we got this discount card.  It’s pretty fun.  We’ve been twice this month and I hope we go again a few more times before it gets too cold.

The first time we went Wingnut got a little club, too, but he didn’t really know what to do with it and kept leaving it places.  It took him a couple of holes but eventually he figured out the goal is to get the ball in the hole.  So he would walk over, drop his ball in the hole with one hand, then pull it out with the other.  He did it again and again until the rest of us finished the hole.

Peanut had fun hitting her ball around, especially when it went through things like the the lighthouse and the castle.  She’s getting better and better at hitting the ball.

This is our scorecard from the first time.  The second time we didn’t keep track because it’s a waste of time.  ODD always wins without much competition because I suck at mini golf.  After each hole I’d ask Peanut what number she got and she’d make something up.  That’s why her numbers are all over the place and for hole #7 she told me she got “flower” so there you go.  For the first few holes I just filled in a random number for Wingnut because I didn’t want to leave the space blank but once he figured out  how the ball went in the hole I started counting how many times he did it at each hole and that’s the number he got.

The second time we went Wingnut got bored just carrying his ball around and started looking for places to throw it.  His favorite place was the water.  We had to fish his ball out three or four times during our game.

Our card is good for a year so I think we’ll definitely be going again.  It’s a nice way to spend a summer evening.

Summer Storms

Posted by hairyshoefairy on Thursday Aug 19, 2010 Under Little Peanut, Memories

This morning the sky remained dark with clouds.  The rain pattered down here and there as we did our morning routine and after putting Wingnut down for a late morning nap I got to really enjoy it.

I gathered up a blanket and took Peanut outside to our back deck.  The eave is far enough out I can sit outside through an entire storm and not get wet.  I wrapped myself and Peanut up in the blanket and read a couple of chapters of James and the Giant Peach (the book we’re currently reading together) aloud.

After I finished reading, Peanut and I snuggled deeper into the blanket the way I used to snuggle with my Grandma L.  Together we watched the gray-white sky strobe with lightning.  The  cherry trees waved to us in the wind as the rain continued its chatter.  We sat in silence and let the deep thunder rumble through our chests.  It was an almost constant drumroll with occasional louder claps that made Peanut jump a little.  She thinks it’s on the scary side while I find the sound soothing yet exciting.  Maybe some day she’ll come around.

In any case she told me she loves snuggling with me outside in the storm.

I love it, too.

The Nut House

Posted by hairyshoefairy on Tuesday Aug 17, 2010 Under Little Peanut, Wingnut

Peanut

  • ODD had some sticky notes out the other day for something and Peanut saw him sticking them all over the table, computer, and books.  The next day she started turning all of her drawings into sticky notes with the help of some Scotch tape.  She taped her new sticky notes all over the house.  They’re on the fireplace, the garage door, the chair, the table, the couch.  It’s funny to see her figuring out ways to do the things ODD and I do.
  • Yesterday Peanut was singing “Row, row, row your boat” over and over again, sometimes adding in new words or morphing it into a new tune but once in a while she would actually end the song as it’s written with the exception of “life is but a dream,” which she changed to, “sputter, sputter, dream.”  I laughed and sang the right words to her but she told me that wasn’t how it went and sang it her way again.  I think she really thinks that’s how it goes and it makes me laugh every time I hear it.
  • She’s also changed the end of the alphabet song.  Sometimes she cuts it short, leaving off W-Z and skipping right to “now I know. . .” and I’ve gotten so used to hearing it I don’t always notice anymore.  The other funny thing she does in the song is at the end when she sings, “now my know mine ABC’s. . .”  Again, I’m afraid she really thinks that’s how it goes and won’t sing it any other way.
  • When we’re in the car we’re always listening to the radio or my mp3 player and if she doesn’t like the song that’s on Peanut will ask me to change it to a song she likes so she can sing along.
  • As you can see she very into singing these days.  She always has been, really, but lately it’s been all day long every day.  It’s rather enjoyable most of the time, especially when she’s making up new songs about whatever is going on around her and our neighbors get serenaded every day while she’s out swinging on the swingset.  She belts out all sort of made up songs then.  It cracks me up to hear what she comes up with and she’s completely oblivious that anyone else can hear her.
  • I’ve been practicing a few songs I’ll be singing at my family’s neighborhood party next month and one of them has some opera.  I was classically trained and used to sing opera quite a bit.  Sometimes it can be really loud.  Think along the lines of Wagner.  You know, the lady with the breastplate and shield and helmet.  Like that.  So I was working on this opera bit and Peanut started shouting at me, “It’s too loud!  It hurts my ears!”  I looked over and she had her hands covering her ears and was huddled into a ball.  Poor thing, I think she’s been traumatized by opera.  Now when I’m going to practice it heavily I warn her in advance so she can go outside to play while I sing so I don’t hurt her ears anymore but sometimes she chooses to stay inside and practice with me.  Apparently it doesn’t hurt her ears when she sings it herself.
  • The other morning when I went into Peanut’s room to get her for breakfast she showed me her latest creation.  ”A brella” (or an umberella) made out of legos and a tent stake.  The stuff she comes up with is so goofy sometimes.  With legos and bristle blocks she’s made a computer, a teeter totter, a fishing pole, a cake, and countless other funny things.  I try to remember to take pictures of them but can’t always remember what they are.

  • For Peanut’s birthday my mom made her a flower blanky rug.  It’s quilted and soft like a blanky but she can sit on it on the floor like a little mat or rug.  My mom had her choose the fabric while we were doing the quilting shop hop in June and she loves it.

Wingnut

  • We have hit the head butting phase.  I’m sad to say it began with Eskimo kisses.  I taught Wingnut how to do an Eskimo kiss and he thought it was fantastic and wanted to do it all the time.  They aren’t very easy to do with him because he leans his head toward me until he bumps my forehead and waits for me to move my nose back and forth across his but his little nose is too far away because his head is tipped so far forward and he doesn’t move his head so I have to do all the movement for the nose rub.  After a while he started becoming more forceful when bumping his forehead against mine and found this to be delightfully funny.  Then he stopped waiting for me to be paying attention before he did it so now we’ve moved in to full on head butting.  Usually it nails me right in the nose.  Honestly, I’m a little shocked he hasn’t given me a bloody nose yet with all the head butting he attempts during the day and now I reserve Eskimo kisses for bed and nap time after I’ve already laid him down and can be in a bit more control of the forehead situation.
  • Wingnut has become a little copycat.  If he sees ODD leaning with his back against the counter he’ll pad over and back himself up against the cupboard next to ODD then look over to make sure he’s doing it right.  The other day I was sitting on the edge of the bathtub while Peanut brushed her teeth and Wingnut came over and tried to sit on the edge of the bathtub, too.  I had to help him with that one and keep my hand behind him so he didn’t fall into the tub but once he was up he looked so proud of himself.  Then a while ago while Peanut was having a time out for something or other Wingnut wandered over, and sat down next to her with his legs sticking out like hers were.  ODD and I started laughing so Peanut started laughing and pulled her legs up before I could get a picture of them sitting the same way but it’s funny to see how much he tries to be like us.

time out

  • When I bought Peanut some wings for her birthday I bought two sets so if she had a friend over they could each play with one.  Well, we don’t play with anybody cuz I’m loser-mom and also becoming a hermit not organized enough to arrange that kind of thing but the bee wings have found a new owner in Wingnut.  He seems to have laid claim to them which is okay with Peanut as long as she still has the butterfly wings to wear.  Periodically throughout the day he’ll bring the bee wings over, hand them to me, and turn around so I can put them on him.  Then he runs around the house making a growly, buzzy sound until it’s naptime or we have to go somewhere and I take them off.  He’s become so attached to these bee wings.  It’s really cute.  They’re now a favorite toy with both kids.

  • The growly buzzy sound doesn’t just stop at the bee wings, though.  Wingnut now growls much of the time.  I remember Peanut growling at people around the same age but I’d forgotten until Wingnut started just recently.  I think he does it more than she did, though.
  • Wingnut loves playing with balls.  We got Peanut some balls around the time she turned one but she never really got into them.  She likes them enough now but they’re never the first thing she plays with.  Wingnut is all over them.  He throws them, kicks them, and just carries them around.  He plays with them all the time.  At the McDonald’s playplace the first place he goes is the basketball area.  He’d hang out there all day if I let him but I have to drag him out crying and screaming so he doesn’t get pounded into the pavement by all the bigger kids dribbling and shooting baskets.  As long as I take a ball out for him to play with his crying doesn’t last too long.  I think as soon as he’s old enough we’ll sign him up for soccer since kicking balls around the yard seems to be what he likes best.  I also believe “ball” was his first real word.

  • Wingnut likes to eat grape tomatoes from my garden.  Every time we go outside he toddles over the my grape tomato plant, plucks a tomato (sometimes ripe; sometimes not) and take a bite out of it.  Then he tosses it aside.  Sometimes he finishes the bite, sometimes he spits it out a minute later, and whether he eats it or not has nothing to do with the ripeness.  We now have a bunch of half eaten grape tomatoes all over our yard.

  • Wingnut loves wearing sunglasses.  He started playing with Peanut’s one day while at the pool so the next time I was at Target I picked up a little pair for him.  Peanut and I usually wear ours in the car and Peanut can reach hers and put them on herself.  Wingnut, seeing us, likes to wear his in the car, too, and will fuss and yell at me, pointing to his sunglasses until I stop and give them to him.  He’s really good about keeping them on and looks so cute wearing them.  What a cool little man.

Sandbox

Posted by hairyshoefairy on Wednesday Aug 11, 2010 Under Little Peanut, NYDD, Wingnut

We were recently at a family reunion for ODD’s mom’s family.  The house it was held at had a great big sandbox with lots of sand toys.  Our kids loved it and we had to practically drag them out of the sand when it was time to go.  On the way home ODD began planning out where we could put a sandbox in our yard.  We decided to transplant a few of my herbs and set one up in a corner garden area.  I left ODD to do all the work and took off to the Cupcake Conference, which was awesome, by the way.

When I returned home ODD sent me outside to have a look at our brand new sandbox and told me how the kids had spent quite a while playing in it once it was finished.  Since then they have played in it for a little while almost every day and would probably play in it even more if it weren’t 90+* outside.

The other day ODD took the kids outside to play and as they made their way across the grass Peanut burst into song.  To the tune of “I Love to See the Temple” she sang, “I love to see the sandbox, I’m going there someday.”  She takes after her daddy in making up new word to songs.

Yeah, it’s on the small side but so is our yard and so are our kids.  The big piece of wood is a cover so the neighborhood cats don’t use the sandbox as a potty while we’re inside.  It is propped against the fence while the kids play.

Sometimes they play happily together, other times not so much.  This was a happy moment.

This wasn’t so much.  That’s Wingnut sitting himself down and having a little cry after I relieved him of a shovel he was using to whack Peanut in the head.
