Summer Storms

This morning the sky remained dark with clouds.  The rain pattered down here and there as we did our morning routine and after putting Wingnut down for a late morning nap I got to really enjoy it.

I gathered up a blanket and took Peanut outside to our back deck.  The eave is far enough out I can sit outside through an entire storm and not get wet.  I wrapped myself and Peanut up in the blanket and read a couple of chapters of James and the Giant Peach (the book we’re currently reading together) aloud.

After I finished reading, Peanut and I snuggled deeper into the blanket the way I used to snuggle with my Grandma L.  Together we watched the gray-white sky strobe with lightning.  The  cherry trees waved to us in the wind as the rain continued its chatter.  We sat in silence and let the deep thunder rumble through our chests.  It was an almost constant drumroll with occasional louder claps that made Peanut jump a little.  She thinks it’s on the scary side while I find the sound soothing yet exciting.  Maybe some day she’ll come around.

In any case she told me she loves snuggling with me outside in the storm.

I love it, too.

  • What a special experience to get to share with your daughter! It was an amazing storm, and it sounds like you really got to enjoy it. :) I love that you’re reading “James and the Giant Peach” together.

I commend you tenfold for having the presence of mind to take advantage of a moment like that. I certainly didn’t manage it today.

I love this. I wish I were doing the same with Hailey right now.

Love it! Love those storms! I wish I had a kid to share it with. :)

I love that you and I both have the same happy memory of Grandma L…she snuggled with me during storms when I was little, too! I forget a lot of things these days, but I remember that!

  • This is adorable. And it makes me miss rainstorms. We don’t get them too often. :)

I love the storms there…the smell, the clouds. We have strange weather here, being directly east of the mountains. We get rain frequently because the cool air coming off the mountains meets that hot air from the east…but it makes the storms quick and erratic, and then they’re gone and the day is hot again. I miss a good rainy day from home. What a weird post to make me homesick, huh? :)

Wow, you are such a good writer! How nice to relive memories, while making new ones with your little one. I wish it would rain more here!
