Burned

I took the kids to the pool this afternoon.  Before we left I had all of us in swimsuits and meticulously sunscreened (if you have to use sunscreen as often as we do sunscreened becomes a real word) any bit of visible skin including hair parts and ears.  Off we went and had a lovely time playing in the outdoor kid pool.

Wingnut spent the majority of the time clinging to me like a monkey, wrapping his arms and legs around me and snuggling into my chest.  After a while he figured out it was like having a bath and disentangled himself from me so he could dance around and splash.  Peanut stuck pretty close to me for a while, too, but before long she was splashing around and playing with other kids.  The water was just right for the hot weather and there was not a single tear from either kid the entire time.  It was beautiful.

About an hour and a half after we got home I started noticing some tenderness on the top of my legs.  When I took a look I found, despite my efforts, they had sunburned.  It’s not too bad.  It didn’t blister, but it’s still tender and hot.  It’s amazing to me the difference in temperature between my sunburned skin and my not sunburned skin.

knee sunburn

Apparently I forgot when I’m standing my swim shorts come to my knees so everything below that got sunscreened but when I sit down the shorts pull up a bit farther and expose more of my skim milk skin.  The white blotches on the kneecap are where some random sunscreen accumulated for some reason.  Gotta love that.  My legs are usually hidden well underwater so I don’t worry too much about sunscreening them but today, in the kiddie pool, I was sitting in 1-2 foot deep water with my legs out so the whole leg was exposed and now it shows.  I should have been more careful with my application because even my shins got some sun.  Now I’m popping some Ibuprofen and putting my aloe vera plant to good use.

Oh, Pumpkin…I’m sorry! I’m glad it’s not worse – no blisters, at least! But even a mild sunburn still hurts and itches. Hope it heals quickly!

That invariably happens to my back. No matter how hard I try I can’t seem to get a good sunscreen application on my own back….. Hope you feel less painful soon!

  • I need an aloe vera plant. Bad. That looks painful.
