Visit To Kermit’s, Part 6: Santa Fe

On Saturday Kermit, Scooter, Teeny, and I took a little trip to Santa Fe.  Scooter helped us know where we were going and after parking we walked down some of the cool, shop lined streets.  We had to stop in on a couple of shops to check out some pretty, gauzy blouses and dresses and Teeny found some cool, metal jewelry boxes.  We didn’t buy anything but still had fun admiring.

After a little more window shopping we stopped in at the Plaza Cafe to eat.  While waiting for our orders we munched on sopaipillas with honey.  They were really good and Wingnut gobbled them right up.  The atmosphere was fun and rowdy and the food was so tasty.  I had a chicken enchilada with blue corn tortillas and red and green chili.  It came with beans and spanish rice.  I love spicy food but don’t make it much at home because ODD doesn’t much spice.  Usually I try to make my spicy dishes on nights I know ODD will be gone so he doesn’t have to eat it.  On the up side, more for me, more for me, ha ha ha, more for me.  Anyway, back to the restaurant, my enchilada was nice and spicy and I love it.

Next door to the restaurant was the Santa Fe Indian Trading Company.  They had some fun hand-made Native American stuff from different tribes.  Around the corner were open market stalls where other Native American’s were selling their own hand-made items, mostly jewelry.  There was some beautiful work and it was cool to see how some of the different stones that are local to the area were made into jewelry.  Turquoise set in silver was a given but there was also a lot of onyx and some orange and green stones I can’t remember the names of.  Growing up I had a few pieces of turquoise I got from my grandparents but in general I’m not a huge fan of it.  I couldn’t leave Santa Fe, though, without picking up something iconic from the area.  I thought these little cut turquoise earrings were perfect.

I also found a little wallet snap wallet for Peanut.  I knew she’d love it because it was pink and had a butterfly on it.  Something similar could probably be found many places but she doesn’t care.  She’s already filled it with random treasures.

We walked around the plaza a little bit before heading toward the Railrunner  railyard.  Kermit found some great goodies at a little shop called One Of One there.  We’d walked quite a way and still had to walk back to our car so before heading back we stopped in to the Flying Star Cafe to grab drinks.  In their pastry case I saw the biggest éclair I’ve ever seen in my life.  It was at least as long as my hand if not longer.  I kind of regret not buying one but after my big lunch I just couldn’t do it.  It looked awesome, though.

Santa Fe was beautiful.  I’m not a huge fan of the pueblo style but in that city it really is beautiful.  The warm reds and browns against the blue sky is striking.  There were bunches of chilies hung from brackets all over and if I walked close enough I could smell their lovely fragrance.  I don’t know how much of the city we actually saw but the parts we did walk through were so enjoyable I’d be happy to go back for a visit anytime.

  • I would have exhibited zero self-control in regard to that éclair. It would have been purchased and gobbled up within seconds! FACT.
