My Cake Wreck Part II
Posted by hairyshoefairy on Sunday Mar 28, 2010 Under Cool Stuff, Crap, Suck, Swear Words, YumAfter seeing the pile of crumbs and frosting cake Peanut and I made on Friday ODD wanted play, too. As it happens, his brother, Macho Man, and Macho Man’s wife, Marzipan, were blessing their new baby today and we needed to bring something yummy to contribute to the after-blessing celebration. When I asked ODD what he wanted to take he chose a rainbow cake. Saturday was full of me becoming a gardener followed by going to a friend’s wedding reception so we didn’t get around to making it until 11 or so. We did bright colors this time, divided the batter, and each filled one of the pans.
I did a color wheel then swirled the colors together.
ODD swirled his colors around the pan in spirals.
The primary colors were all on the bottom and the secondary all on the top. We think it looks a little Tim Burton-esque. In our minds that’s a good thing.
This time I greased the pans like I know I’m supposed to instead of trying to use a short cut and they came out seamlessly. After finishing a movie around 1:30 am, when the cakes had cooled, I put them together and frosted them with white so the colors would pop when the cake was cut.
This morning before we left for the blessing I threw stuff in the crock pot so we could have pulled pork sandwiches tonight for dinner. We went to church with Macho Man and Marzipan for the blessing and enjoyed their little sacrament meeting. After the meeting we went over to their apartment complex and had a nice lunch outside in their courtyard. Guess what we had. Pulled pork sandwiches! I laughed to myself about it. I didn’t mind because I like pulled pork sandwiches. It was just funny. After eating a sandwich and some other really tasty food I cut into my cake on the dessert table. The cake turned out really cool.
I think ODD’s layer turned out cooler than mine did when sliced. His is the bottom layer.
We had a good visit with everyone who came. Peanut played with a bunch of her cousins, Wingnut tried eating pine needles, sticks, and a piece of charcoal, and ODD and I made some fun plans for next weekend with the Wild’s. After sufficiently sunburning my nose, forehead, and part we gathered everything and everyone up, waved goodbye, and headed for our car. I was holding both Wingnut and what was left of the cake (a little less than half) so ODD asked if he could take something as we walked to the car. I told him to choose and he picked the cake. I put buckled Wingnut in, ODD buckled Peanut in, and we began our drive home.
As we pulled out of the parking lot we heard a scraping, thumping, and rolling on the roof of our car. I looked at ODD bewilderedly until he said a naughty word. Then all became clear.
The cake.
The cake, the cake plate, the knife, and the server were all on the roof of our car. ODD had set them there to buckle Peanut in and had never picked them back up.
Crap.
He quickly pulled over to the side of the road and came to a stop. Too quickly. More scraping ensued and we listened and watched, almost in slow motion, as the now empty cake plate slid along the top of our car, down our windshield, across the hood of the car, and over the edge out of sight. I was relieved to see it in one piece as it passed the windshield but the second it went off the edge I audibly gasped and almost cried, knowing it wasn’t going to be whole for much longer.
ODD jumped out to check the damage. The cake fell off behind us and splatted on the road in a beautiful rainbow mess, stabbed through with the knife and server. I kind of wish I’d jumped out and taken a photo. It was pretty sad.
The cake plate met it’s demise when it bit the pavement in front of our car after the abrupt stop. I’m rather sad about it. As I recall, it wasn’t terribly expensive. I bought it at the Crate and Barrel Outlet in Berkeley several years ago. I use it fairly frequently, though, and not just for cakes. It’s so pretty and simple with a small fluted edge. It’s a great size and the color and style doesn’t detract from whatever is on it. I’m sad to see it go. ODD feels really bad about it and says I can get a new one to replace it. He knows how much I liked it.
Though our cake and cake plate both met a sad end today the cake itself ending up on the road was probably a good thing. I’m sure we didn’t need to have that much more sugar just hanging around our house waiting to be devoured and at least it happened after everyone had a chance to eat a slice instead of before. As for the cake plate, adieu good friend. I’ll remember you fondly and miss you much.

I really love this cake idea and can’t WAIT to try it!!! Seriously, it looks awesome. What kind of food coloring do you use? Can I just use my normal “droppers” or do I have to buy something else?

The cake turned out beautifully! I’ll have to try to make one
Sorry to hear about the demise of your cake plate, et. al.

[...] the kids napped. I used three 6 inch cakes so it would fit on the only cake stand I have since my pretty white one is no more. The pink and purple don’t really look good with the green but Peanut didn’t mind. [...]
