A Shot At Soft Pretzels

This afternoon was I in the mood for a soft pretzel from Pretzelmaker but didn’t feel like going to the mall just for a pretzel.  They’re so yummy but I have a hard time forking over $4 for a bit buttery dough so I began to wonder if I might be able to make some pretzels myself.  I poked around online a little and found a recipe by Alton Brown I thought I’d try.  It was surprisingly easy and they turned out pretty darn good.  They aren’t quite as good as Pretzelmaker pretzels but they were good enough for me.  They also totally beat out Target’s pretzels.  Glittersmama and I both agree Target’s pretzels are less than great so that wasn’t really hard.

A couple of minor tweaks to the recipe.  I divided mine into 16 instead of 8.  They were a good size for us.  I only baked 8 of them and after boiling the other half I put them in the fridge to get cold and will throw them in the freezer tonight so we can bake fresh ones another time.  I don’t have pretzel salt so I just used my regular kosher salt.  It worked fine.  After they finished baking I melted some butter on them so they were a bit softer.  They are nice and salty and I like to eat them with mustard.  They came out of the oven just before Wingnut got up from his nap and he happily munched one with me.  Peanut had one after her nap, too, and the whole time she ate she exclaimed, “This is the best food!”  Gotta love that.
