Teeny Time and February’s Sewing Project(s)

Last week Teeny sent me a text asking if I’d be able to participate in a panel for her concurrent enrollment FCHD (Family, Consumer, and Human Development) class.  I agreed and on Thursday the kids and I made our way to Tiny Town.  I dropped Peanut off at my mom’s preschool which was kind of crazy because they were having the first day of their two-day Valentine’s celebration (they have two days because many kids only come MWF or TR).  Peanut was thrilled to be part of it, though.

Then I sped out to the high school and found out all the visitor parking was taken.  I went in to the office to ask where I should park since the visitor parking was taken and they asked where I’d left my car to go talk to them.  When I told them I’d parked in one of the 25 unused handicapped parking spaces they acted like I’d attempted murdering someone and told me to park a million miles away if I could find a place.  Great.  Thanks for the awesome help.  Also, do you really expect 25 handicapped people to just suddenly show up and fill in all those empty spaces during the next hour I’m here?  Didn’t think so.  Just sayin’.

So after finding someplace to park and hiking back to the school with Wingnut on my hip I paid a little visit to my old choir teacher and caught the tail end of a presentation one of my old high school buddies was giving about his band to the songwriting class.  What are the chances he’d be there the same day I was.  Both of us were quite surprised to see each other there.  So I talked to him for a minute until Teeny came to find me and take me to her FCHD class.

Being on the panel was fun and Wingnut was so well behaved.  He sat on my lap almost the whole time charming everyone in the class.  He didn’t squirm or fuss at all.  I was the youngest of the panelists, the oldest being 75.  The students asked us questions about jobs we’ve held, our college experiences, goals we’d reached or not reached, and what some of the best moments of our lives have been so far.  It was fun to hear all the answers everyone gave.

After the class ended Teeny’s friend J came in to say hi.  He was holding Wingnut and we were chatting and getting our stuff gathered up when the oldest panel member started talking to me.  He asked about my kids and motioned to J, telling me we had a cute family.  I laughed and explained that J wasn’t actually my husband.  That made him laugh and he motioned to J and Teeny asking if they were married.  I laughed some more  and explained they were still in high school.  He got a good chuckle out of that and explained he didn’t think I looked old enough to be married with kids even though I was and since Teeny and I look so similar (and she’s taller than me) he figured we must be around the same age.  It was a funny conversation and we all laughed about it for a while.

Teeny skipped her last class and went with me to pick up Peanut.  My mom and dad took us all out to lunch before the kids and I had to head home.  We visited while we ate and Wingnut began making kiss-y faces to entertain us all.

The next day I spent all day trying to get some sewing done.  It really did take all day because sewing with two kids who always need something is rather ridiculous.  It at least doubles and often triples the amount of time it would normally take me to do a project.  Still, I must try.  My project for the month was to make a new purse for Teeny.  I had an idea in mind but wanted to make sure it worked before doing it for Teeny’s bag.  I was going to make her a bad like the owl one I made but instead of an owl I wanted to do a hedgehog.  I tried my first idea on a little cosmetics bag.  The end result was not as great as I’d hoped (sorry, no photo) so I had to rethink my idea.  I came up with something I thought would work better and gave it a try on a bag for myself.  It worked just the way I was hoping.

After finishing it, though, I stepped back to really look and thought it didn’t quite say Teeny to me.  So I looked around online and found a few tutorials for fabric flowers.  I made a few different flowers, then chose three to put on Teeny’s bag.  The bag ended up being much more along Teeny’s lines of style than the hedgehog would have been but the hedgehog suits me just fine so I’m still happy I made it.

Teeny's birthday bag

I had to finish the bag on Friday because we were again heading to Tiny Town on Saturday and I wanted to give Teeny the bag then instead of mailing it because her birthday was the next week.  My parents offered to watch the kids while ODD and I went out for a Valentine’s date if we stayed long enough for me to do Teeny’s hair for the Valentine’s dance and we happily took them up on it.  For our date ODD and I went to Avatar in 3D and were blown away by the animation.  When we got back so I could do Teeny’s hair ODD was in a post-Avatar depression.  He now feels he cannot watch another film without feeling like it doesn’t measure up to the coolness of Avatar’s CGI.  I did Teeny’s hair with pretty braids and curls and it looked beautiful with her dress.  Again, sorry I have no photographic evidence of this.  Just trust me.  Teeny looked very pretty and I’m happy she asked me.  She doesn’t have many high school dances left so I’m happy I can be there to help while they last.
