As you may have noticed Peanut’s hair is getting quite long. It grows like crazy and the wild curliness is getting sort of not-so-cute. I’ve trimmed the very bottom about 1/4 inch once of twice just to even it up, but she has this kind of shelf that I’ve never really touched. It’s from when she rubbed all the hair off the back of her head as a little baby. It grew in around the same time the top of her hair reached the bald spot. So everything below her occipital bone is about 2-3 inches longer than everything above her occipital bone. It’s gotten so long and stragely lately I’ve been wanting to cut it but any time I bring it up NYDD puts up a bit of a fight.
Until this weekend.
On Saturday NYDD commented on how yucky it was looking and that it’s been getting nasty looking a lot quicker these days. Then he suggested maybe it was time to cut it. I must say I was pretty shocked and got excited about giving her a little bob. NYDD was reluctant to have that much chopped off so we compromised and I agreed to take it up only to a little above the top shelfy thing.
Today was the big day. I straightened it, cut it dry, then gave her a bath to see if all the curl went away – sort of a concern we had with chopping off a lot. Interestingly the curl looks a lot better. All the stragely ends were really weighing it down, I think. She loved getting her hair done, was excited to wear the “apron”, and held her head the way I asked her to. What a big girl!
Before – slept-on curly:
Before – straight:
Can you see the shelf?
After – curly:
After – straight:
And here’s what I cut off:
Pardon the staticy straight shots. With the changing weather and the snow the static has been crazy here. I love the way it looks, though. When it’s curly I think it looks sort of 30′s/40′s Hollywood glamour, which I really love.

It looks so great. She is so adorable. I can’t believe how much more hair she has than Glitter.
YOU DID WHAT!?!?!? I think I’m crying…:(
OK, I’m better now. It does look very cute, doesn’t it? I like how it made her curlies curly again.
What a pretty girl! I do love her hair straight; she looks so grown up.
HOW CUTE IS SHE! I love the curls, it really does look like a Hollywood glamor cut! Good job!
Looks fantastic, good job.
She is so beautiful! Great job, momma!
Wait, she held still and COOPERATED? Must be a girl thing.
And yes, that was dirt/mud on Sir O.
Beautiful! I would do that but I don’t imagine Lolly would hold still for it….she’s kind of vain about her hair. Plus, I’m too attached to it to cut it!
I love it! She is so cute!
Her first real hair cut, how fun! I wish my mom were a hair stylist! Seriously, I’ve said that to her before. I mean she does everything else, why can’t she cut hair too?
Aw, I LOVE it!!!
She looks so pretty! I was sort-of sad reading it, though. First haircuts always make me sad for some strange reason.
Do you think Peanut would mind sharing some of her thickness with The Princess? Seriously, The Princess has so little hair that I haven’t got a clue how it gets so fro’d out by the end of the day!
Holy cow! She’s so darn cute! Good job on the hair!
We received your Christmas card today! Thank you so much! You guys look awesome in your photo.
I love the glamour look. Although, she looks a lot older in with her hair straight. It’s kind of funny that NYDD is so possessive of her long hair.
I wish my hair would do that glamourous thing . I am missing your hairstyling skills. I was looking at the pictures of the Jr. Dinner and I really love the coloring you did before it. Can you come visit me before the big ball? (or anytime?)
How seriously darling! I loved her long hair, but we all have to have it cut occasionally. And her new length with it’s amazingly enviable curls is perfect for her! I love love love it! Such a cute girly. And how nice to have a mom who is a hairdresser!
I remember the “shelf” well. That is the main reason I cut Karen’s hair so much. It’s only finally gone now, after two years of growing hair! (I say two years because she had almost none for about a year) Now Grant even has a little “shelf” too! It looks like I cut it straight across right over his bald spot-a neat little line of hair growing over the bald spot. Poor guy!
ADORABLE!! I absolutely love it. Good job!
Such beautiful hair, and so thick for her age. She is darling! Good job on the cut HSF. She looks so grown up!!
oh my gosh, i cannot believe you cut that by yourself. BY YOURSELF. you are brave and oh so talented. every single time i cut the guys’ hair, ava wants me to cut her hair. i always say no, i’m just too chicken. and she’s almost 6. my question: how do you get peanut to sit still, not just during a haircut, but during blowdrying and straightening. i am highly impressed!
Her hair looks fabulous! I love the curl in it. I wouldn’t know what to do with curl, but I love it anyway.
I hope you’re having a great Christmas week! I’ll try to send some sort of update soon.
[...] has been looking like a ragamuffin for quite some time now. I’m not surprised. Her last haircut was around Christmas. Her hair has gotten so long and scraggley it doesn’t look good anymore even freshly [...]
