To Cut Or Not To Cut

Currently I have long-ish hair.  It has a little bit of wave but not enough to do anything with so I usually straighten it.  That’s pretty much the only style I give it.  That or a ponytail.  Blah.  I like having long hair so if I want to I can do something really pretty with it, but I’m past the age of going to dances all the time and most days the only people who see me are Peanut and NYDD.  So basically it gets “done” on Sunday’s.  I also have this lovely new hair sprouting out where I’d lost hair after giving birth.  It’s quite attractive.  Especially when the rest of my hair is pulled back and it’s exposed.  Ick.  Also, a couple of girls in my branch have recently cut their hair and it’s so cute, it has me coveting a cute short cut, too.  I have a wonderful stylist in Utah, who is completely darling, but I can’t get there more than two or three times a year so my hair is looking pretty shabby.  I’m wanting a new cut.  Now, I’m not talking about a freak-out-Brittney-Spears-style cut.  The cut I want is similar to a cut I’ve had before.  It’s one I love.  It’s really quick and easy to do every day.  It does takes some up-keep, though.  I have to get it cut every 4-5 weeks to keep it in do-able condition.  If it gets too long at all, I stop doing it cuz it just doesn’t work right.  This has been my main reason for not getting it cut while here.  I haven’t really had anyone to go to.  There’s a girl in my branch who works in a shop but it’s really expensive so with needing a cut every month she’s not really an option.  Then I remembered yesterday, there’s a girl who used to do hair and is now managing a building up the street.  I talked to her after church today and since she’s not working in a shop she’s agreed to give me a cut every few weeks for a lot less than in a regular place.  I’m so thrilled!

Now I’m just trying to decide if it’s really what I want to do.

I like having long hair.  It used to be 6-8 inches longer than it is right now and I thought it was pretty.  I had it long for about 5 years, then about a year and a half after NYDD and I got married I decided to whack it off.  That’s the cut I love.  Now it’s getting long again and it’s fine, but I don’t love it the way I used to.  It’s not a pretty and I miss having a style.  I just feel blah.  I’m wondering if it will pass and in a few weeks I’ll be back to loving it, or if I’ll still want it cut.  Here are a few pics.  See what you think and PLEASE, give me a little input.  I’ve pretty much decided to cut it, but I need a little reassurance.  What do you think?

This is an engagement picture.  On average, this was the length of my hair for about 5 years.

really long

This is the day I whacked all my hair off.  Notice the ponytail I’m holding.  I donated it to Locks of Love.  Very cool.  Here it just had a-line layers so it was all layered in back and none in front.  I think this time I would do a little layering in the front, too.  I’d still keep the a-line, though.  Loved that.  Plus I could do some fun things with color placement when I get around to coloring it again.
Big Whack
This is a better front view.  I’m at the Grand Canyon.  I was visiting Fuffy who was working at Jacob Lake at the time.  It was pretty soon after I had it cut.

This is where I am today.  Blah, blah, boring.  And in serious need of trimming.
where I am today

So, think I should go for it?

  • I say WHACK IT OFF.

Then, when you are growing it out, pay uber attention to it so that you like it more when it grows out (Trims, cool, glossy color, etc.). It isn’t the length that is making you feel boring it is the lack of OOOMPH and people doing double takes because a big change occured.

Go for it, you look awesome in short hair. Hair can grow back.

    P.S.
Someone got their photos taken at First Dam!

  • Ooh! Yes, yes, yes!!! I’m in serious need of color, too! Last time was. . .um. . . October, I think. I can do it myself, but it takes forever and I never looks quite as good cuz I can’t really see what I’m doing. I think I’ll have my friend do that, too while I’m at it.

  • DO IT! I have chopped my hair off lots of times–really short–and it always grows back. Your hair looks adorable short like that and bonus that you won’t have to pay so much to keep it up. That’s definitely the worst thing about short hair. There’s something liberating about having your hair cut off. Plus hey, think about how much less shampoo and conditioner you’ll use. :)

  • I was here just 15 minutes ago, and now I think I’m lost. I like what you’ve done with the place.

Ah, questions like that. I’ve been wanting to whack mine for almost 6 months now, but REALLY whack it. Like all short like my newbie mom hairs…. but knowing that short hair requires frequent cuts has held me back. A – even if I can get it cut cheap (which I can) – frequent cuts still adds up to lots of moolah I could easily spend elsewhere. Or just as easily not spend, because I don’t have it (drat).
B – short hair can’t be pulled up/back on a super-bad hair day…. and me and my million cowlicks have plenty of those… but your proposed haircut isn’t so short that you’d have that problem.

If the money isn’t as big an issue for you, I say go for it….. if it is an issue, maybe a trim and a color could de-funk-ify you and hold you over for a bit longer.

  • Thanks, glittersmama! I’m still messing with it.

  • Kim

I say give it the CHOP! Love shorter hair in the spring/summer. Also, then you can do fun stuff with color and be a little daring. ;) Guess what, my SIL is a stylist at StudioK. That’s where I get mine done too. Small world. :)

  • i say cut it off. i’m totally with everyone that it will grow back, so it’s not really a big deal. AND your short hair looks GREAT. i think it really frames your face nicely. do it! do it!

i love the new look too. very fresh and springy!

  • Cut, cut, cut. I’m a pixie-cut addict. I know not everybody wants to go that short, but your short pictures look great. Short is so much easier. I grew up in Salt Lake, on the same block as a compound of polygamists who all had this long, long hair that was always braided, so I have a hard time not associating long hair with bondage. For me, the monthly cut is worth not spending time on styling.

  • Woman, if I looked half as cute as you do with short hair, I would have cut it yesterday!! You can totally pull the short ‘do off… it looks dynamite on you, even!

I’m having the same issues as Em, with the new, short undercoat coming in post baby- I have a constant, curly halo, and I HATE it… If I had any courage at all, I would cut it- but curly hair, short- hmmm…not so hot.

Whack it. It feels and looks great, gives you an emotional lift, and will GROW BACK! Fight the FRUMPIES!

  • You know what I’m going to say. Chop it off but good. You’ll love it for summer, and it will start growing back right away, anyway.

Get yourself a plane ticket and let Kim color your hair! It would be the same price as getting it done in Cali. Heh.
