Hairyshoefairy, Quite Contrary, How Does Your Garden Grow?

NYDD is mocking me. I am trying my hand at growing plants. Really, I have a big brown thumb. I do my best to avoid the Mother’s Day gift at church because it’s usually a plant and I figure, why take one if two days later it will be a shriveled mound of compost. The same goes for poinsettas at Christmas. I just don’t even attempt it anymore. A couple of years ago, for Valentine’s day NYDD took me to a shop to choose my own plants. They were to be potted plants that would last a while. Part of the gift was, although they would be my plants, NYDD would take care of them (he is a green thumb). So we bought a few plants. NYDD planted some in his parents yard just before we moved to California so the only one we still have is some bamboo. I look at it and call it my plant, but really NYDD is the one who takes care of it.
Earlier this summer, NYDD came home from the store with a banana tree. Yes. You read that right. A banana tree. Apperently one can purchase them at one of our local grocery stores here. It’s a dwarf banana tree so it won’t get huge, but it’s still pretty big IMO. It sits on our balcony and NYDD hopes someday it will blossom and pollenate and we’ll have little bananas we could actually eat. I don’t know about that. Also, when we took over this job, the old apartment managers left a couple of vines for us to take care of so NYDD has been doing it and they look great.
So plants grow really well here apperently and I decided to give it a shot. Perhaps my brown thumb is a regional thing. Here on the coast it might be green. So one day I was at Target and in their dollar area I saw a bunch of little plant-growing packages. I bought one of lavender, which I love, and got a little pail to plant it in. So far, nada. NYDD thinks I watered it too much and the seeds rotted. I may have to try again. But, I also got a little thing for cilantro. I love cilantro and use it quite a bit. The really cool thing about this little plant kit is that (unlike the lavendar package) everything was included. Seeds, pot, and dirt. Everything. It was all in a little box about 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. It’s so little. I thought it was really cute and was really proud of myself. I showed it to NYDD when he got home from school the day I planted it all. He laughed really hard because it was so little. But I’m showing him. I actually have little plants sprouting up. Given, NYDD usually waters and takes care of it cuz I don’t think about it, but it’s still my plant and it’s still growing. Look at me! I’m a gardener! I grow stuff! Here’s a pic of it next to a quarter so you can see how little my cute pot is. I’m quite proud.

And look at my cute little Peanut. She doesn’t care about plants yet. She just likes milk and her binkie.
